Somewhere over the Rainbow.......A Lesson in Tolerance
This week Peoria hosted its first annual gay ride event. THAT’S RIGHT! Right here in Central Illinois. Kinda hard to believe? Sucks to suck. I’m glad that there might be a sliver of hope for this city I call home. Peoria is such a culturally diverse region and sometimes it’s hard to tell. If you stop to think about it, sure you can pick a town in Central IL and stereotype the people that live there, but think about a lack of publicized diversity. I’m sure that there is a lot of stuff that I don’t see just because I’m pretty busy and I don’t literally search for everything new and exciting. As I was reading up on the topic at Pjstar.com, I noticed quite a few forum comments that bashed the event. This upset me quite a bit. Now, I am not gay, but I do support the whole “gay pride” movement because I believe people should be able to live the way they want to. To narrow that statement down a little bit, People should live the way they choose as long as they aren’t causing bodily harm or damage to themselves or any other persons. That seems like a fair and logical way to accept a different culture into our lives. The worst part is that people were bashing the event because “It’s not Christian”. STOP and think about this whole thing please hear my point and feel free to respond in your own views. (I hoped this topic would get me quite a few comments)1. From what I remember about hearing in church, is that Jesus/God accepts everyone no matter who they are or what life choices they make. 2. There is a separation of church and state (pertaining to gay marriage) 3. If you believe in fate, that means that god made homosexuals to live their life that particular way, so why would he oppose their choices? I’m sure that there are plenty of other things that I could come up with but that could be saved for a future blog. My overall point is that gays don’t bash the straights for their life choice, return the favor and shut your mouth if you are not educated on the subject. If you truly have weighed out the options and read up on the views and you are still against the topic, I respect that and I believe that you are allowed to state your opinion, BUT IN A RESPECTFUL MANNER.

That's awesome that Peoria had a gay pride event. I've always wanted to go to a gay pride parade. I used to be best friends with a gay guy. I also believe that as long as your not hurting yourself or anyone else, you should be able to live your life the way you want to. And as for the whole God thing, he's supposed to love all of his children. Therefore, I dont see how Christians can be anti-gay. I am a straight woman who is all for the gays.
ReplyDeleteAwesome, aweseome topic. i have a few gay friends so i went to the parade to support them. im glad they have something so "not Peoria" scene. it's good to see a guy like yourself who doesnt get freaked out by gays, too. but i totally agree with your points about the whole Christianity thing. its really hypocritical that they say that God accepts everyone, yet they push so many people out of their church.
ReplyDeleteVery relevant topic, Adam.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised to hear about the event, too. I was actually told about it by an ICC student of mine who I taught at Washington who is transgender. I think an event like this is the first step toward tolerance.
